WILDLIFE: BIRDS: GOLIATH HERON

Goliath heron
Class: Aves

Order: Ciconiiformes

Family: Ardeidae

Genus and species: Ardea goliath

Common name:
Goliath heron

Similar in colour to the purple heron, the Goliath heron is unmistakable for its large size, more than 1.5 m. In flight it is different from other herons for its legs stretched not along the horizontal, but at an angle below. Solitary. It can be found around wetlands throughout the country (except in the northeast region): large lakes, rivers and permanent swamps. Breeds at lakes Baringo and Naivasha, where it can be easily seen fishing.
