Widespread and common in wetlands above 1,300 m, in western and central regions, from the central Highlands to lake Victoria and Mount Elgon. Gregarious except in the breeding season. There is a similar animal although darker in colour, the black crowned crane, rarely observed in lake Turkana, and treated by some authors as a different species.
