It can be distinguished by the elongated spoon-shaped bill. The male is brightly coloured, while the female is spotted in chestnut tones. Gregarious and migratory; in Kenya it is found from late October to early April, in the Rift valley lakes and in the Highlands. It feeds on small aquatic invertebrates, fruit and seeds.
