A
llow me to introduce Morani. He is a black rhino, a tame one, which is quite bizarre in this species, the most aggressive of African rhinos.

When Morani was a baby rhino, his mother was shot down by poachers. He was reared in captivity. Several attempts to release him to the natural milieu were unsuccessful. Morani was unable to cope with the strive for survival. His very first flirtations with a female of his species were to infuriate a huge dominant male, who inflicted him such a severe beating that jeopardised his life. Recovered from his wounds, today Morani lives and thrives in a near-to-freedom controlled environment. You can find him at the Sweetwaters Game Reserve, in the Laikipia Highlands, between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range.

Although Kenyan parks are teeming with animals, the truth is that many species are threatened by poaching and habitat destruction. Like Morani, many other animals orphaned, wounded, ill, or rescued from illegal trade, find a shelter in wildlife reserves and sanctuaries.
